Why did I randomly get a netspend card? ›

Why does the IRS send Netspend prepaid debit cards in the mail? If the IRS doesn't have your direct deposit information on file, you may receive money in the mail. This can come in the form of a check or a prepaid debit card. One type of prepaid debit card the IRS may send is Netspend.

The EIP Card will also come in a white envelope prominently displaying the seal of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The card has the Visa name on the front and the issuing bank, MetaBank, N.A. on the back. Information included with the card will explain that this is an Economic Impact Payment.

All transactions made using Netspend cards are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) up to the current coverage limit, and the cards can be used anywhere MasterCard and Visa debit cards are accepted.

"Depending on how many checks a consumer cashes each month, choosing a Netspend account could be more cost-effective and allow individuals to shop online, use ATMs and send money to friends," she says. A most common way to get a Netspend prepaid debit card is by opening an account on Netspend.com. Along with offering sign-ups, the site describes everything you need to know about using the card, its features, benefits, and fee structure. To begin the process, click the "sign up now" button.

If you receive a debit/credit card that you didn't apply for from a bank that you don't bank with, call the card's bank immediately. The bank will be able to clarify why you received the card or tell you if it's a scam. Do NOT use the contact numbers provided in the mail with the card.

Starting February 15, 2024, the Employment Development Department (EDD) begins issuing payments for unemployment, disability, and Paid Family Leave customers on new Money Network prepaid debit cards. Benefit payments will no longer be issued on Bank of America debit cards.
